NAME

chgrp - change the file group ownership

SYNOPSIS

chgrp

[-h] group file...

chgrp

-R [-H|-L|-P] group file...

DESCRIPTION

The chgrp utility sets the group ID of the file named by each file operand to the group ID specified by the group operand. If the option -R was used, the chgrp utility changes the file group ownership of directory trees.

OPTIONS

-R

Recursively change file group IDs.

-h

If a file is of type symbolic link, the chgrp utility tries to change the ownership of the link.

-H

If the -R option is specified and a symbolic link referencing a directory is specified on the command line, chgrp changes the group ID of the directory referenced by the symbolic link and all files in the file hierarchy below it.

-L

If the -R option is specified and a symbolic link referencing a directory is specified on the command line or encountered during traversal of a file hierarchy, chgrp changes the group ID of the directory referenced by the symbolic link and all files in the file hierarchy below it.

-P

If the -R option is specified and a symbolic link referencing a directory is specified on the command line or encountered during traversal of a file hierarchy, chgrp changes the group ID of the symbolic link.

OPERANDS

The following operands are supported:

group

A group ID to be assigned to file.

file

A pathname of a file whose user ID is to be modified.
